NGOs want Ambiga and Anwar to be charged for causing unruly rally

KUALA LUMPUR (May 1, 2012): Police have been asked to act against the organisers of the protest rally which turned violent and destructive in the federal capital last Saturday.

Three non-governmental organisations (NGOs), namely the Suara Anak Muda 1Malaysia, Kelab Mahasiswa 1Malaysia and Persatuan Veteran Tentera Melayu lodged reports at the Dang Wangi district police contingent headquarters, here, today.

Dang Wangi police chief, ACP Mohamed Zulkarnian Abdul Rahman confirmed having received the three police reports.

The three NGOs asked police to take legal action against the rally organisers including lawyer Datuk S Ambiga and oppposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and those who participated in the rally, which caused chaos, and for violating the court injunction that prohibited the gathering from being held at Dataran Merdeka.

They said the unruly rally had also caused injuries to policemen and media personnel, as well as damage to public property and police vehicles.

Persatuan Veteran Tentera Melayu (Malay Army Veterans Association) president, Mohd Ali Baharom said the association urged the Home Ministry to charge all those responsible soon, especially Ambiga, as they were worried she might organise more of such gatherings. Kelab Mahasiswa 1Malaysia (1Malaysia Undergraduates Club) president Muhammad Nor Kasim said it regretted that there were university students involved in the illegal rally.

"We are sad that the students failed to realise that they were just being made use of by groups serving their own personal interests," he said.

Meanwhile, Suara Anak Muda 1Malaysia (1Malaysia Young People's Voice) president, Arman Azha Abu Hanifah said the opposition leaders involved were not fit to be leaders as they were prepared to divide the people.

He said the NGOs would jointly send a memorandum to the Home Ministry to urge it carry out a thorough investigation into the violation of the law and court injunction by the rally organisers and others involved.

KOTA KINABALU: Media Prima bagged an award and secured 11 merits at the Kinabalu Shell Press Awards 2011 yesterday.

Poliana Ronnie Sidom of Berita Harian won the Bahasa Malaysia News Reporting Award for her series on the Kundasang landslide. She took home RM2,500 and a certificate.

Colleague Mohd Izham Unnip Abdullah received two merits for his news series on water supply (Bahasa Malaysia News Reporting) and floods (Environmental Journalism Award), while another colleague, Hassan Ommar, won a merit for his articles on the Kedayan ethnic tribe under the Journalism Award.

New Straits Times journalist Roy Goh won two merits for his articles on foreigners taking over farms (English news reporting) and rhino conservation (environmental journalism award).

Merit winners received RM500 and a certificate each.

TV3 journalists Elphege P. Godomon, Mohd Yazzer Mahmun and Mohd Fairuz Mohd Yazzer received a merit award under the Broadcasting Journalism Award for their report on the National Key Result Area in Sabah.

The TV3 team also clinched a merit under the Business and Economic Reporting Award and Entertainment Reporting Award.

Photographer Edmund Samunting of The New Straits Times Press (NSTP) won two merits in the Photography Award and Sports Photography Award.

NSTP photographer Datu Ruslan Sulai won a merit award in the Best Picture Award. They received RM500 and a certificate for each category.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman presented the prizes.

Licences of eight travel agencies revoked for cheating clients

KUALA LUMPUR: The licences of eight travel and travel agencies were cancelled for fraudulent activities involving clients from 2010 to March 31, the Dewan Negara was told.

Deputy Tourism Minister Datuk Dr James Dawos Mamit said throughout the period, 12 complaints of fraud were recorded, including five umrah packages and three travel packages, he told Senotor Boon Som Inong

Boon wanted to know how many travel agencies are registered in the country and how many travel agencies had been punished for cheating cases involving travel packages, including umrah packages.

Dawos said as of March 2012, 3,069 licenced travel and tour agencies had registered with the ministry.

He added that the ministry was also in the process of amending the Tourism Industry Act 1992 to include new guidelines to protect the rights of clients and the tourism industry.

Since cheating cases have become rampant, especially when packages signed up by customers were not fulfilled, provisions are required to safeguard customers from being exploited by travel and tour agencies. 

Pak Lah: Rights of media personnel must be respected

KEPALA BATAS: Former Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi says the rights of media personnel must be respected and that they should not be prohibited from discharging their duties.

He said it was unfortunate and regrettable that while carrying out their duties during the April 28 Bersih 3.0 rally in Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur, some journalists and photographers were treated badly and were hurt.

"That, to me, should not have happened. They are doing their job.

“Give them a chance to do their job. Why should they be hit by those who do not like them?," he told reporters after meeting Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) leaders in Penang Golf Resort here Thursday.

Abdullah said it did not give the right for anyone to hurt journalists and cause bodily injuries to them.

He said scuffles could occur at any time and place, noting that there was no guarantee that such incidences would not happen even in a peaceful gathering.

"Ideally, there should not be such gatherings in the first place.

“If anyone has issues, they should just meet up with the authorities concerned, whether in a group of 10 or 20 persons, to conduct necessary discussions.

"After that, they can make statements (to the media) that they had conveyed their views to the authorities on the matter," he said.

Abdullah, who acknowledged the celebration of World Press Freedom Day on Thursday, also stressed that journalists must always strive hard to boost their integrity as well as the quality of news that they report.

He said he hoped journalists would maintain their good image and display high integrity that would convince the people about the reports that were carried in their respective media.
