KUALA LUMPUR (May 3, 2012): The High Court here today set Aug 6 to hear a RM100 million defamation suit filed by former Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil against Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Wanita chief Zuraida Kamaruddin and another.
Judicial Commissioner Vazeer Alam Mydin Meera set the date after ordering lawyer Datuk Ahmad Redza Abdullah, representing Shahrizat, to submit an official application to amend the statement of claim.
Vazeer Alam said that under the new system, all cases filed at the High Court (New Civil Cases) had to be disposed within nine months.
In the suit filed on Jan 19 this year, Shahrizat also named PKR director of strategy, Mohd Rafizi Ramli, as a defendant, for allegedly making defamatory statements against her in relation to the National Feedlot Corporation (NFC) project issue.
Shahrizat is claiming RM50 million in general damages and another RM50 million in aggravated and exemplary damages.
She is also seeking an injunction to refrain the defendants from making further statements, whether oral or by way of publication, against her in connection with any matters related to National Feedlot Corporation Sdn Bhd (NFC) or its associated companies.
The Wanita Umno chief claimed that the defendants had systematically and maliciously launched a campaign to "attack, discredit, malign and defame the plaintiff" by spreading slanderous allegations against her.
Zuraida is represented by lawyer Razlan Hadri, while lawyer Ranjit Singh represented Mohd Rafizi Ramli.
