Workers march across city in protest against minimum wage

By: Marwan Hashim

KUALA LUMPUR: Some 1,000 workers marched across city centre of Kuala Lumpur on the morning of Labour Day to show their dissatisfaction over the announcement of the minimum wage policy by the government.

The participants were mainly comprised of the NUBE (National Union of Bank Employees) where they started marching from Central Market towards Dataran Maybank and chanting ‘Stop Union Busting’ and demanding for RM1,500 to be the minimum wage policy. The government announced yesterday that the minimum wage policy of the country is set at RM900 and RM800 for Peninsular and East Malaysia respectively. The union said that RM900 would not be enough and called for it to be increased to RM1,500.
