KUALA LUMPUR (May 1, 2012): Rasah PKR deputy chief R Thanggam has been remanded for three days for allegedlly causing mischief at the Bersih 3.0 rally on Saturday.
He was arrested at midnight yesterday at his home in Seremban.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Mohamad Salleh in a statement yesterday confirmed that they detained a man in Negri Sembilan to facilitate investigations into his alleged involvement in a rally at Dataran Merdeka.
Mohamad, who did not identify the suspect, said the 50-year-old man would be remanded until Thursday. “The case is being investigated under Section 440 of the Penal Code for mischief during disturbances,” he said.
Police had claimed that they resorted to firing water cannons as protesters broke through the barricades in an attempt to get to Dataran Merdeka.
Police also fired tear gas to disperse the crowd.
It was reported yesterday that social media sites were claiming that video evidence showed that PKR adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and deputy president Azmin Ali instigated the charge on the barricades which led to chaos in the streets.
The video showed Anwar signalling to Azmin. The latter then spoke to a man standing next to him, who proceeded to remove a metal gate and darted towards Dataran followed by the crowd.
Both Anwar and Azmin have vehemently denied the allegation.
Anwar said he only signalled to Azmin to negotiate with the police while Azmin denied ordering anyone to barge through the barricades.
PKR vice-president N. Surendran, confirmed that the man arrested was Thanggam and he was being held at the Dang Wangi police headquarters.
Surendran said that magistrate Azmil Muntapha Abas ordered Thanggam to be remanded for three days.
The magistrate made the order after Surendran had objected to the seven-day remand requested by the police.
Meanwhile, three non-governmental organisations (NGOs) – Suara Anak Muda 1Malaysia, Kelab Mahasiswa 1Malaysia and Persatuan Veteran Tentera Melayu – lodged reports at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters here yesterday, reports Bernama.
The NGOs asked police to take legal action against the rally organisers including lawyer Datuk S. Ambiga and Anwar and those who took part in the rally, for violating the court injunction that prohibited the gathering from being held at Dataran Merdeka.
Dang Wangi police chief ACP Mohamed Zulkarnian Abdul Rahman confirmed having received the three police reports.
